Vintage 1840s natural history plate of mackerel and swordfish in fine detail.
Customize yours and order now. This vintage natural history plate from the 1840s shows two elegant fish on a soft ivory background: above, a lively Atlantic mackerel with emerald and ink‑black stripes; below, a sleek swordfish with a long bill, bright golden eye, and steel‑blue body that fades toward the tail. Crisp lithographic shading and fine scales meet French captions such as Poissons and Latin species names, giving the artwork a calm, scholarly feel that suits coastal and classic interiors alike.

The illustration comes from a 19th‑century Dictionnaire d’histoire naturelle plate, pairing a mackerel study with a swordfish profile in measured, scientific proportion. The restrained palette, delicate stippling, and period typography preserve the archival charm, while the open negative space makes the fish appear to float—clean, balanced, and timeless.
This motif fits kitchens and dining rooms with a culinary or maritime theme, coastal living rooms, studies, offices, and hallways. It pairs nicely with natural wood for a warm look or black frames for a crisp gallery vibe. Great as a gift for ocean lovers, anglers, foodies, science teachers, and anyone who appreciates vintage illustration.
