Vintage 1840s ichthyology plate: hand-colored fish and anatomy with exquisite detail.
Make it yours now. This 1840s natural history illustration presents two exquisitely detailed sparoid fishes on a warm, ivory field. The upper fish is olive to slate with orange fins and subtle lateral markings; the lower fish glows in coral and rose tones, its diamond scales and spined dorsal fin rendered with crisp precision. Small scientific insets show a toothed jaw and an eye study, while elegant French and Latin captions anchor the plate. It’s scholarly, serene, and quietly vibrant.
Here’s how it works: pick your size, choose the print material, and set the orientation. Add an optional personalized caption, date, dedication, or location line to make it yours. Adjust borders or margins if you like, preview instantly, and place your order. No account needed, no fuss—just a clean, fast path from idea to finished wall art.

About the art: sourced from Dictionnaire d’Histoire Naturelle of the 1840s, this plate captures the clarity and care of period scientific engraving. You’ll notice the fine hatch work on scales, the gradient washes along the fins, and the measured spacing of the typography. The contrast between the dusky upper fish and the red sea bream below creates a balanced composition with generous negative space.
This motif suits kitchens and dining spaces, coastal or nautical interiors, studios, bathrooms, and reading nooks. It pairs well with light woods, linen textures, and clean white walls, or stands out in a gallery wall mix. As a gift, it’s a thoughtful pick for anglers, marine lovers, science enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys vintage illustration.
